Artist Statement
My painting practice is an ongoing exploration of the medium's potential to operate as a visual analogue for historical production. Retelling, revising and occasionally fabricating the lost narratives of northern British Columbia, my paintings explore the boundaries of authorship, 'otherness', and cultural ownership.
The hybrid figures that populate my landscapes are subjected to the emotional turmoils that line the history of British Columbia, often succumbing to states of ecstasy, sexuality, and ultimately violence.
Embracing the potential of hybridity in painting, I have developed a collage approach to the medium whereby I combine varying source materials, painterly applications, and historical references.
The picture plane operates as a playful arena for experimentation. It is an open invitation to continually evolve an idiosyncratic working methodology. It strives to challenge both the formal and material potentials of the medium. For the viewer, my paintings offer a space in which the contemplation of how histories and identities are produced is possible.
