Laing's meticulous paintings and prints deal with textures and patterns found in landscape and in the domestic environments. His current work incorporates historical lace designs, elements from nature and European landscapes. These works are lush and captivating as layers of visual elements seemingly hover over each other in translucent and iridescent glazes.
Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Bill Laing emigrated to Canada when he was fifteen. He received a Diploma of Art and Design in Photography and Printmaking with first class honours from the Vancouver Schoool of Art. Laing continued his education in England and received a Certificate of Art, with Distinction, from the Brighton Polytechnic in 1971 and his Master of Fine Arts, with Distinction, from the Royal College of Art, London, England in 1974.
